Knee sleeve or knee brace? Learn the difference, when a copper knee compression sleeve makes sense, and how to measure for the right fit.
When you search for knee support, you'll see two kinds of products: knee sleeves and knee braces. They're not the same thing. Here's how to tell which one fits what you need.
A copper knee compression sleeve is a stretchy, pull-on tube that wraps the knee in even compression. There are no straps, hinges or hard parts, so it's light, flexible and slim enough to wear under pants. Copper Joe knee sleeves are knit with copper-infused nylon that resists odor and wicks moisture.
Knee sleeves are best for:
A knee brace usually adds straps, side stabilizers or hinges to limit how the knee moves. Braces are bulkier and are often recommended by a doctor or physical therapist after an injury or surgery.
If a medical professional has told you to wear a hinged brace, follow their advice. A sleeve isn't a replacement for a prescribed brace.
| Knee sleeve | Knee brace | |
|---|---|---|
| Support type | All-over compression | Straps, stabilizers or hinges |
| Bulk | Slim, fits under pants | Bulkier |
| Range of motion | Full | Often limited on purpose |
| Everyday and sports wear | Ideal | Less comfortable |
If only one knee bothers you, a single copper knee sleeve is enough. Many people buy a pair of knee sleeves to cover both knees, or to wear one while the other is in the wash. They come in black and pink.
A good fit feels snug and stays put without rolling down. It should never cause numbness, tingling or deep marks. If it does, go up a size.
Research on copper itself is limited. Most people notice the compression and the comfortable, odor-resistant fabric. Think of a copper knee sleeve as everyday support and comfort, not a medical treatment.
